This can be an emotional time for candidates, so talk to them about their feelings about resigning – this could be a role they’ve been in for many years and one where they will be leaving good friends amongst their colleagues. Encourage them to be prepared for the business’ reaction too. Are they likely to be asked to work their notice or be put on gardening leave? Will the manager thank them for their time and efforts or make them feel guilty for leaving? If the candidate is not prepared for these outcomes it can catch them off guard and ultimately leave them unsure as to what to do. Discuss potential outcomes with the candidate in advance to minimise their likely impact and ensure that the candidate is better prepared.
