We have mentioned this before – but it is worth repeating because it is such a vital point. The quality, accuracy and efficiency of your search will be largely dictated by how well you took the Job Brief in the first place. There is a subtlety in doing this in the correct balance. Firstly, you must ask your client intelligent questions that allow you to refine down the search parameters and, in short, narrow your search universe. A smaller search universe is quicker and easier to approach, attract and qualify. But don’t narrow your universe down so far that your search becomes impossible (you don’t want to be looking for a reality TV star with brains!). So sometimes you need to actually consult with your client to expand the search universe – or ‘flex the specs’.
In some cases you need to do both! For example, you may need to narrow down the professional background required, but expand the educational demands that the client is making.
