Think like a consultant, act like a consultant
Sometimes the worst step to make towards becoming consultative is to try to act consultatively. This seems an odd statement but if you change your behaviours immediately then people around you are going to notice! At its worst this is liable to come through as fake and transparent. As a result it won’t be effective and is likely to be a short term change which you’ll rapidly grow weary of. A more long term focus is to start thinking like a consultant. Think of yourself as a peer, value what you do and look for opportunity to assist your candidates and clients. If you focus on your attitude and become more self-aware at this level, any practical changes that you go on to make are more likely to be perceived as genuine and valuable and are therefore more likely to endure into the long term.
